Cognitive and Affective Ability towards Language Acquisition

Introduction
In Douglas Brown’s book, Principle of Language Learning and Teaching Fifth Edition page 33 chapter 2 in paragraph 1 line 5, it states that “language was just one manifestation of the cognitive and affective ability.” It means that language and human cannot be separated. How human gets first language, then it is produced to communicate with others and it will affect human’s life. The statement inspires the writer to take “Cognitive and Affective Ability towards Language Acquisition” as the topic to be discussed.

Discussion
Language is used by human as a tool of communication. But, we, as a human, cannot have language directly because we have to get language learning process firstly. Hurford (2004) said that the first thing that comes to mind is our own native language. Language is taught to us since we are infant and continues on as we grow up by the environment, interaction and discourse as Brown’s statement, children are then shaped by their environment …. children learn to function in a language chiefly through interaction and discourse. So, first language acquisition is affected by environment, interaction and discourse.

Related to cognitive and affective ability, first language is also affected by them. Brown states that all human beings are genetically equipped with abilities that enable them to acquire language. Also, Klein (1986) states that first language acquisition is intimately bound up with the child’s cognitive and social development. How human produces language, it depends on their cognitive and affective ability.

Based on the writer’s experience, the writer has a young sister. Now, she is 12 years old. Her name is Nala. The writer still remember when Nala was still a baby. It happened when the writer was invited by her father to go around the city at evening with Nala. On the way, they looked many lights in the streets and the writer called Nala to look the lights while the writer said ‘Waahh, so many lights’. So, Nala tried to pronounce it with ‘mpu, mpu.’ But, now, she is 12 years old, the way of her language has been different when she was a baby. She has pronounced ‘a light’ perfectly. The writer thinks that the language we have, it is caused by the development of cognitive and affective ability we have. The development of human is followed by the development of cognitive and affective ability themselves.

Another experience that the writer wants to share in relation with the topic is the writer’s way in writing in a written language. The writer likes writing on a blog. She started it since 2009. She feels that the writing style in 2009 (18 years old) and now (23 years old) is different. At the first year, when the writer wants to write ‘I’ into Indonesian language, it was ‘akkuuhh, guee.’ It is like ‘alayer’. But, now ‘I’ becomes ‘saya.’ The writer feels the writing style is more focused, as well the language use. These changes are caused by many experiences to the writer when she starts to write a blog. There are many friends (bloggers) and good articles which surround her, so it brings the new comprehension how she writes. It is supported by the statement of Moghaddam and Araghi in their journal about Brain-Based Aspects of Cognitive Learning Approaches in Second Language Learning, “…after an environment is created and the methods are appropriate in the manner of the brain’s learning process, students will not need much instruction, they will be able to understand and do activities on their own.” So, in this case, the quality of language of human is generated by cognitive and affective ability.

Conclusion
Language is generated by human with paying attention to the ability than human has, especially at the first language. In accordance with the statement in Brown’s book that states ‘language was just one manifestation of the cognitive and affective ability’, it can affects the quality of language. There is combination between cognitive and affective ability to produce language. The trained ability of a person, the better way of human generates language.

Thank You, Class A of ELS Program Hasanuddin University 2014

Hello, World! 😀

In this chance, I post my journey in my first semester in ELS Program Hasanuddin University.

In 2014, ELS Program has about 53 new students. We are divided into two classes. The students who have odd student’s numbers are in Class A, and even student’s numbers are in Class B. So, Class A has 27 students and Class B has 26 students.

As we know, ELS Program has three concentrations. They are Education, Literature and Linguistics Concentration. I choose Education Concentration. For this semester (1st semester), we have three basic courses (English Phonetics and Phonology, Morphosyntax and Transformational Generative Grammar, Semantics and Pragmatics) and two courses about our concentrations.

Left2Right: Echa, Eka, Ning, Mala, Kk Sahlim, Ikhwan, Ussy, Kiky, Desty, Kk Deasy, Kk Nana, Salmah, Kk Mul, Kk Lewi, Sapta, Kk Alim, Destri, Kk Kiky, Afny, Kk Ratih, Kk Asdar, Riri, Kk Aiz, Kk Faika, Fadhly and Kk Suaib
Left2Right: Echa, Eka, Ning, Mala, Kk Sahlim, Ikhwan, Ussy, Kiky, Desty, Kk Deasy, Kk Nana, Salmah, Kk Mul, Kk Lewi, Sapta, Kk Alim, Destri, Kk Kiky, Afny, Kk Ratih, Kk Asdar, Riri, Kk Aiz, Kk Faika, Fadhly and Kk Suaib

Fortunately, I belong to Class A. The class which always makes me happy, comfortable and relaxed. Thank you, guys, for your friendship. Nyamanna’. Hehehe.

In Class A, there are 9 students in Education Concentration, 9 students in Linguistics Concentration and 8 students in Literature Concentration. We have same schedule in the three basic courses and different schedule for courses that related to our concentration. And do you know? I always feel lively with them.

Because we are at the end of this semester and we will not be in same class anymore for next semester, on Desember 21, 2014 (Sunday), we had a plan to go to Salmah’s house in Samata, Gowa. We had a family picnic and studied together because we would have a final test for TG Grammar by Prof. Manda.

Kerja, kerja, kerja :D
Kerja, kerja, kerja 😀

In Salmah’s house, we helped Salmah’s mother to make Sup Ubi in the kitchen. When everything has been done, we ate together. What a nice togetherness. After eating, we took a rest for a moment and continued our next plan. That’s STUDYING TGG. We gathered to discuss about problems we had that related to TGG and Kak Mul as the teacher of TGG. *hihihihi… Sometimes it was serious, sometimes it was funny because of the cakes. 😀

Belajar di balik Berpose

After studying TGG, we were invited Salmah to take mangoes in her mango orchards. Wow, we got many mangoes.

Makasih mangganya, tante dan Salmah. :*
Makasih mangganya, tante dan Salmah. :*

Because the day would be dark, we asked for permission to go home to Salmah’s parents and Salmah. The service was very nice. We were happy there. Thank you, Salmah. :*

The next day, 22 December 2014, Monday. We had the final test of TG Grammar from Prof. Manda. On 09.00 p.m. the test was done and Prof. Manda was very on time. He has been in the room early. He is one of my favorite lecturers. I always observe him when he finishes his teaching, he always cleans all of his writing on whiteboard. I remembered what Pak Supardi said to me that after finishing your teaching, you should clean the writing on whiteboard. It gives a message that we must give a good impression for next class that want to use a room after we used.

Thank you, Prof. Manda for giving us the knowledge and taking photo with us.

Also, thanks to our great lecturers in this semester, Prof. Hamzah, Prof. Hakim, Prof. Noer Jihad, Mam Sukma, Mam Nasmilah, Mam Ria and Mam Etty for the great teaching and knowledge for us.

Thank you for my friends in ELS Program to give this experience, especially Class A.

I will miss our craziness, dumba-dumba ta if the lecturers want to point us to answer some questions, our presentations, and our discussions in class and LINE. Also, Class B. Thank you, guys. Keep this relationship and friendship, please.

Thank you, Ussi for these word and photos.

Studying in English Language Study (ELS) Program Hasanuddin University

As we know Hasanuddin University (Unhas) is one of the best universities in Indonesia that is located in Makassar, South Sulawesi Province. Unhas is the only university in eastern Indonesia that gets the best accreditation from BAN-PT, A. This indicates that Unhas’s achievement in applying Tri Darma Perguruan Tinggi is greatly honoured, credible and has high quality.

I am one of the fresh graduates who continue my study in Unhas, English Language Study (ELS) Program, this year, 2014. There are many other reasons why I choose ELS Program in Unhas. Firstly, the study program has vision and mission to build the best human resource quality in education and research field which related to English. Secondly, there are three concentrations which are provided for students in learning English specifically; they are Education Concentration, Literature Concentration and Linguistics Concentration. I choose Education Concentration because my educational background in S1 is English Education. Thirdly, it has curriculum that provides the arrangement of the courses according to the concentration perfectly. The study program has a good system in managing the learning process to make a good output (human resource), it should also be remembered that this study program has the best lecturers who have excellent capacity in English, so it can be a positive impact for students to study harder and achieve the goals. Therefore, I feel lucky to be one of the students in ELS Program to build and explore my ability, especially in English.

Odd Class of ELS Program Unhas 2014
Odd Class of ELS Program Unhas 2014

However, continuing study in different place brings something new in my life. I come to a new environment, meet new friends and lecturers. It is quite difficult to adapt with them firstly, but it does not take a long time to enjoy time with them. Although studying in ELS Program is excellent, there is also weakness in it, classrooms. We need more classrooms to study because sometimes the classroom we want to use is clash with other classes from different semester.

In short, whatever the situation I get in studying in ELS Program is, I will regard it as a learning process in life to get better life in the future.

*This is one of my assignments in Academic Writing of English Course.
Thank you for Mam Dra. Nasmilah Imran, M.Hum., Ph.D. as the lecturer and the editor for my writing. 🙂

I still have many mistakes in writing, but I will improve to be better. 🙂

Welcome to the Red Campus, Ning!

IMG_20140828_205240ed“Welcome to the Red Campus, Welcome to the Jungle! Welcome for Struggling, Ning!”
Wow Wow Wow…!!! >.< Fighting, Fighting!!!

How I can start to say this. Emmm.
Alhamdulillah, I get the chance from Allah and my parents to continue my study in English Study Language Study Program, Hasanuddin University, Makassar. I started to register my self on March 20th, 2014, then had the test on April 22nd – 23rd, 2014. Thanks to Allah, the online announcement stated that I passed the test on June 5th, 2014. 🙂 So, I arrived in Makassar on August 20th because the inaugural lecture for students of postgraduate was held on August 28th, 2014.

One of quotes from the Rector Assistant I of Unhas, “Let’s build the quality, in order to survive.”

Welcoming New Postgraduate Students in Baruga A.P. Pettarani, Hasanuddin University, Makassar, on August 28, 2014
Welcoming New Postgraduate Students in Baruga A.P. Pettarani, Hasanuddin University, Makassar, on August 28, 2014

Having a chance to continue my study is the gold chance that I have. Although there are many obstacles towards me, I always believe that there will be a way from Allah. My parents as my main supporters, they have sacrificed everything they have, just for their daughters. Thanks for allowing me to continue my study. I will have effort to make it beautiful for you. :’) Aamiin.

I always remember what my father said, “That’s important, you study well there.” Thanks, Papaa… Huhuhu… >.< You made me affected. I’m going to have effort to get the scholarship. Hope, Allah will give it to me. Or anybody can give me the scholarship. Who wants? Who wants? Who? Hehehehe. Ya, for BPP-DN (Calon Dosen) Scholarship from Dikti, I am not lucky for this year, 2014. It doesn’t matter, Allah gives His mercy to me in other chances. Believe that!

Here, in different place. I get new experiences and surroundings and leave my family, sweet room, and English Education Study Program room in Unidayan. I will miss them. But, I must be able to adapt with current situation. Some things I must know, there will be some problems I get in a new place such as management of time, management of money, and feeling of homesick. So, I must be smart to manage those all.

At least, now, with my status as one of students of Hasanuddin University, I want to concentrate to study well, deepen my knowledge, develop my ability, I don’t have enough capability yet for this actually, and believe that there is a good hope for my better future.

Thanks for people who have been giving supports to me.

I’ll do my best.

Keep fighting, Ning!

Thanks, Allah, for these all. :’)

MLC TOEFL Prediction Test & Seminar Pendidikan Luar Negeri

MLC TOEFL Prediction Test and Seminar Pendidikan Luar Negeri
MLC TOEFL Prediction Test and Seminar Pendidikan Luar Negeri

There was an event on June 15, 2014 (Sunday) at La Ode Malim Auditorium Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University, namely MLC TOEFL Prediction Test dan Seminar Pendidikan Luar Negeri. The event was educative and very interesting. I think that was the first time for such the event held in Baubau. It was followed by students in university, high school, and some teachers.

It was held by Makida Learning Center. It is one of courses in Baubau, located at Jalan Erlangga Ruko Pos 3 Baubau. You can also contact it via Facebook or Twitter.

Sunday morning, I arrived at campus before the event held and met my friends. Did not forget to take some pictures with them. 😀

Before I entered the room, I had to have re-registration and got Paper List Beasiswa Luar Negeri and a booklet of Makida Learning Center.

What we got
What we got

For the first session, all participants had a TOEFL Test, it was about

Mr. Boy was still giving explanation about TOEFL
Mr. Boy was still giving explanation about TOEFL

140 questions in 110 minutes. The questions were WOW WOW WOW.. And I can’t predict how my score will be. 😀 Afterwards, we were explained all about TOEFL, how to answer the questions, tips and trick by Mr. Boy, one of tutor in Master TOEFL Makassar. He had nice explanation. 🙂

Then, we had lunch. Eating time!!! 😀 Ahaideee…
After that, the seminar was started.

The book and I
The book and I

There were three people as resource person. They were La  Ode Aroamonkdo, S.IP, M.A. (Who got his postgraduate degree in Germany), Muhammad Arham (One of students in English Literature Hasanuddin University who got youth exchange from JENNESYS), and Mr. Calleb Coppenger (the author of The Mysteries of the Islands of Buton According to the Old men and Me).

The conclusions that I could get from their explanation and moderator are:

  1. There is a will, there is a way. (Arham’s words)
  2. To get the scholarship, we must have high value and competitiveness.
  3. Of course, we must struggle to get the scholarship and survive abroad.
  4. Studying abroad can open our mind and insight. What we can see abroad, we can’t see it here (Indonesia). What we can see in Indonesia, we can’t see it abroad.
  5. There is no automatic result, it must be filled by working hard and struggling.
  6. If we want to study abroad, we should prepare our self “before the deadline”. For example, we have a plan to study abroad in 2014. So, we must prepare in 2009 or 2010. Yup, I mean “before deadline”. 😀

The closing session was giving of souvenirs to the resource persons and the taking of photos together.

The Sudden Journey to the Pine Forest in Samparona

It happened on June 2nd, 2014. Actually, going to the pine forest in Samparona is one of desires of my friends, Mey. But, it doesn’t always come true. Yah, because our time isn’t always enough and the weather isn’t always so good. So, on June 2nd, 2014, she got it. 🙂

We phoned Athul, Daus, and Iyan in the afternoon. They agreed to go there. But, Iyhan didn’t answer our phone. So, we went to Iyhan’s house to tell what we planned . Because we believed that he was sleeping. 😀 Fortunately, he wanted, even though it was a sudden thing. 😀 All of us (Iyhan, Alam, Athul, Daus, Mey, and I) had gathered and we were ready to go there…

FYI, the pine forest is located in Samparona, in Kaesabu Vilage, Sorawolio district, Baubau. Before we are in there, we will pass a wide area that used as a venue for National Women Campsite (Perkempinas) I.

http://greatbuton.blogspot.com/

And then, taraaaa…  We arrived there…. 😀

Thank you, Iyano as the photographer. 😀

Many people go to the pine forest to take pictures, whether for pre-wedding or for having fun. Yeah, it’s nice location. 🙂 Maybe, if you live in Baubau, you’ll feel bored to look at our pictures because it’s in the pine forest. Again, again, and again. 😀 But, it’s OK, because we enjoy it. There were happiness, joking, laughter and togetherness from us. And they’re priceless. 🙂

A little crazy we did
A little crazy we did
Look at our styles. It's about self confidence. :D
Look at our styles. It’s about self confidence. 😀

How about you, Mey? 🙂

Is it enough for making your dream comes true? Or are there other places you want to visit? Tell us, before you go to Java. 😀 Ahaideee…

Long Time Not to be Romantic

My latest post is about my birthday. It’s my new age, my new life, and my new happiness. 🙂 Thanks Allah.

There have been many stories that I don’t write here, unfortunately :(. And this evening, I wanna  tell something, not for you MUST READ, but it’s about my feeling tonight and I MUST write here. Maybe it is like the romantic words, but I am not a romantic person actually. #eeeaa. 😀 I just write what I think and feel. Because of someone who has stolen my attention. 😉 <3

And I miss you like crazy tonight.
How I can tell you that you’re priceless, while you always make me speechless. :’)
Thanks for all your love that you give to me.
Your care, your understanding, your kindness of heart, your smile, and your anger.
You choose me as one of important people for your life.
And you have been ready to accept all about my weakness.
Forgive me, I always make you angry.
I regard that I’m not a good woman for you yet. Sorry.
I’m always being silent and you’re always being chatty.
But, I always expect you can guide me well.
How I must to be, when I’m wrong because I will always keep doing the best for being what I should be, what I should do.

2013-how-amazing-it-is

Your presence makes me speechless.
I only smile and give thank to Allah for what happened to us.
I feel it’s unpredictable situation because it’s really different before. Strongly differ.

I admit that you’re successful in giving the different nice situation to me and it’s better than yesterday. 🙂
Thanks, dear.

In this loneliness, I still remember you. How are you now?
I hope you’ll get better soon. :’) <3 ({})

The Twenty Third for Ning ‘Little’ Syafitri

Before April leaves me, I have a priceless story. 🙂 This is about a special moment in my birthday celebration, altough it is too late for telling it. Thanks for my best family and my friends. :* Hug you…

A day before April 14th, 2014, Tafry and Hikma brought me a cake of birthday without I knew. Wowww!!! Hey, both of youuuu…!!! Why didn’t you tell me? –” Hehehe. But, thanks for the cake, thanks for remembering me, and thanks for your love to me… That was more than enough for celebrating my day with you all. :’)

Cake from Tafry and Hikma :)
Cake from Tafry and Hikma 🙂

On April 14th, 2014, I thought that the day was a normal day. I didn’t think I would have a surprised moment because I saw the situation, people around me were busy for work. Also, I didn’t think about the birthday so much because I still focused on my work and my tests.

I just spent my day with having lunch alone in RM. Aroma Sedap, near the harbour, by ordering Hot Plate Mie and Hot Orange Juice. Hehehe… So delicious… Yummy. Alhamdulillah. It’s like celebrating my day by my self. So lonely. Hehe… But, that’s OK. 😉 I enjoyed it.

celebrating my day by my self :D
celebrating my day by my self 😀

And do you know? These people were successful to get me wet and smell. -,-” They put a rotten egg and flush my body with smell water. Uuugghh, I vomited to smell the stench. But, I couldn’t be angry with you all. Was that called for beloved person you love? Oh my gosh!

Team of crazy EO –“

When I turned toward, I looked there was one of you brought the tart. Hahahaha. Thank you, dear. 🙂 Made a wish than blew the candles. My wishes were bla bla bla. Hahaha. The important thing was the happiness for our life. 🙂 Semoga berkah. Aamiin.

14042014(018)

When I wanted to clean my body, there was no water in tap outside. So, I came into bathroom and some of my friends went to go to futsal for an hour. *maybe* But they promised to come back again in my house to eat the tart together. 🙂

Wow wow wow… I didn’t think that it would be like this. I didn’t feel that they want to make a surprised moment to me. Hehehe. Thank you, my beloved friends. :’) I’s speechless for all plans you’ve made. :p 😀 *hug you one by one…

*For all friends and family who said ‘happy birthday’ to me via socmed and text message, I say, ‘thank a lot for that. 🙂 You still remember me. :’)’.
